Darjeeling maids is a generic term used to describe North East Indian helpers but they may also include those from Sikkim, Siliguri, Assam, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Gangtok. Women from these regions are known to behave in a more professional manner with a distant behaviour with the employer; more young people prefer their own privacy even while having a maid around in their house. While these helpers consume Indian food at their own homes and understand the spices and herbs, their taste for food is usually a little different compared to mainland Indians, hence time is required for them to hone their skills in Indian cooking. Non-Indians who hire them, especially the Chinese, share some similar food palate with the North East Indians.

Most of these people come from higher altitudes and so they have a good stamina for work. However, due to their high demand in Singapore, employers are increasing facing higher salary demands and preferences for lesser work load from the helpers.
