As of 26 Aug 2026, the Myanmar Embassy will no longer renew PV passports at its embassies overseas, including Singapore.
Here is what I found, sorted into what we know, and what you can actually do today.
First, what is a PV passport?
Myanmar issues different passport types for different purposes.

PV (Passport for Visit)
Meant for visiting other countries.

PJ (Passport for Job)
Meant for working overseas, and requires the holder to be registered and tax compliant as an overseas worker.

Here is the tricky part.
Many Myanmar helpers in Singapore are actually holding PV passports, even though they are working here.
It has been common practice for years.
What we know so far
These are the on-the-ground facts as of 27 August 2026.
- The news traces back to a statement reportedly issued by the Myanmar side on 20 August 2026.
- Agencies have confirmed that PV passport renewals were already being rejected at the Myanmar Embassy in Singapore as of 26 August.
- Helpers can still return to Myanmar to sort out their passports there.
- Returning home does not require 6 months of passport validity, since they are citizens of Myanmar.
Things can change, and embassy can issue clearer notices.
So before anyone books a flight home or panics about a passport expiring next year... wait for the official word.

It will state PV or PJ. |

Check the expiry date.
If it expires in 6-9 months, and you want to renew, this news affects you directly. If it expires later, you have time, so stay calm and stay updated. |

Some agencies have eyes and ears on the Myanmar side and are getting updates faster than any of us. |
