3: What does transfer maid mean?

Transfer maids refer to those maids who are already working in Singapore and possess both skills and experience of domestic work. Either they have completed their contract, if not needed to transfer to another employer due to different reasons. As they are already working in Singapore, they can be interviewed in person.

5: What documents you need for hiring a foreign maid?

There are two different processes for locals and expatriates to hire a maid in Singapore. If you are a local resident, you need to provide the following documents:

  • Identity cards of the entire family
  • Proof of income in the form of Notice of Assessment or his authority to the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) to verify his income with the Internal Revenue Authority (His and his wife’s documents too if applicable).

If you have not paid income tax in the current or previous year and Notice of Assessment is not available,

  • Income tax assessment if working abroad
  • A statement from CPF for last three months’ record, if applicable

If you are an expatriate, you need to provide the following documents to get the maid work permit application:

  • Passport copy of entire family
  • Employment pass of himself and dependent pass of rest of the family

15: What to do if maid gets pregnant?

In case your maid gets pregnant, you need to expel the maid immediately.

16: What to do if maid goes missing?

If your maid goes missing, you must cancel her work permit immediately and stop the payment. You get one month then to find and expel her. Otherwise, you won’t get your $5,000 security deposit.

17: What are the obligations (including medical) of the employer to the maid?

There are few obligations set by Ministry of Manpower (MOM) to be fulfilled by employer:

  • To pay her salary on time
  • To give her proper food
  • To provide her medical care
  • To provide her safe working environment
  • To treat her as human being and respect her

As an employer, you must take care of her health and take her to the hospital often. For hospital expenses, you better have insurance coverage for your maid.

18: How to cancel work permit of a maid?

You can cancel work permit of your maid at any time and MOM requires you to have following documents for the process:

  • Maid’s work permit card
  • Maid’s passport copy
  • A ticket to the maid’s native country
  • A letter to MOM to inform about terminating a maid’s services

19: What is a security bond?

An employer is required to deposit a sum of $5,000 for every maid to the Work Permit Department. Once the usual contract of two years ends, employer must expel the maid and renew the contract. Otherwise he can lose the $5,000 security deposit. Alternatively, an employer can purchase an insurance policy from ANDA or NTUC income which is cheaper than $5,000 security.

20: Does the maid need regular medical checkups?

Yes, proper medical examination is required every six-month for pregnancy, HIV and VDRL. A maid must get herself medically examined within 14 days of her entry in Singapore. If she passes her medical test, she is fit for housekeeping.
