- MOM says driving is not an essential part of household work, so a helper should not drive as part of her domestic duties.
- MOM has said doing so breaches her Work Permit conditions. It would only look at a request case by case, with the employer seeking MOM's approval first.
- Making a helper do non-domestic work can cost the employer a penalty of up to $10,000 and a ban from hiring helpers.
- Letting anyone drive your car without a valid licence for that class is an offence: fine up to $10,000, jail up to 3 years, or both.
- Work Permit holders who convert a foreign licence get a Class 3C licence, after passing the Basic Theory Test.
Friends, this question pops up a lot.
Your helper says she drove back home.
You have a car sitting in the carpark, kids to fetch, and a parent with a 9am clinic appointment... and you are stuck in a meeting.
So can she take the wheel? Here is what MOM and the Traffic Police actually say.
Can a Maid Drive the Family Car in Singapore?
In general, no.
MOM's position, from its 2012 reply to a Straits Times letter titled "Are maids allowed to drive?", reads:
MOM's current employment rules say the same thing in plainer words. A helper:
- Can only work for her employer at the residential address declared to MOM
- Can only perform domestic chores
- Cannot take on work with other employers
Driving the kids to school or your parents to the polyclinic happens on public roads, away from that address. It sits outside domestic chores.
Are There Any Exceptions Where MOM Allows It?
Only a narrow door.
According to AsiaOne's report on that 2012 reply, MOM said it would consider requests on a case-by-case basis, and the employer must seek approval from the ministry first.
What we could not find:
- Any published MOM form or scheme for helper driving approval
- Any criteria MOM uses to decide such a request
- Any MDW line in MOM's FAQ on which work pass holders may drive for work (it lists Construction, Marine shipyard, Process, Manufacturing and Services Work Permits, S Pass and EP, and leaves out domestic workers)
So if you genuinely need her to drive, write to MOM and get its answer in writing before she touches the steering wheel.
What Is the Penalty If My Helper Drives for Us?

Can a Helper Convert Her Foreign Driving Licence in Singapore?

A few more points from the Traffic Police page:
- Applicants must first complete an online Foreign Licence Pre-assessment, then book an appointment
- Work Permit holders must show their MOM employment history
- A licence not in English needs an official translation from a Singapore-registered translation company
- Foreigners living here under 12 months may drive on a valid foreign licence (Road Traffic Act s38); after 12 months they must convert
Now, the catch. A valid licence only answers the Traffic Police question. MOM's Work Permit conditions still apply, so a licence in her wallet does not make driving part of her job.
What About the Maid Seen Driving Her Employer's Mercedes?
In April 2022, AsiaOne and Mustsharenews reported an Indonesian helper who thanked her employers on Facebook for funding her driving lessons and letting her drive the family Mercedes for four years.
The same AsiaOne article recalled a 2012 case: a helper with a valid Singapore licence was in a road accident while driving her employer. The other driver abused her, and the employer, who hit the man while defending her, was jailed one month. That case is what triggered MOM's reply above.
Neither report says whether those employers had MOM approval. A viral post is a poor guide to the law... so please do not copy it.
What About Car Insurance If She Drives?
Sassy Mama's helper columnist Andreas Bosch suggests:
- Ask your insurer whether your policy covers her at all
- If it does, add her as a named driver
- Honestly consider whether you would trust her with the kids in the car
How Can I Get My Kids or Parents Around Without My Helper Driving?
She can still go along. Fetching children from school is part of normal helper work, as long as someone else is at the wheel.
And keep the car keys with a family member who holds a Singapore licence.
