What to look for in your maid before you hire her.

Hiring a maid in Singapore is a big decision.

You’re not just hiring someone to clean the house...

you’re choosing someone who’ll be part of your home, your family’s routine, and possibly your kids’ or elderly parents’ daily care.

And if you get it wrong? Let’s just say, regrets come fast. =(

Whether you’re working with a maid agency or browsing domestic helper profiles online...

here’s what you should pay close attention to before saying yes.

1. Look Beyond the Number of Years

Don’t just ask, “How many years has she worked?” Ask what kind of experience she has.

  • Has she taken care of children, elderly, pets?

  • Can she cook? What type of food?

  • Has she worked in an HDB, condo, or landed property?

  • Working 10 years in Oman doesn't neccessarily mean she will fit the Singapore culture.

In short... experience doesn’t mean much if none of it fits your situation.

2. Attitude Matters More Than Skills

You can train someone to mop the floor or cook your favourite dishes. But you can’t train a bad attitude out of someone.

Look for a helper who is:

  • Willing to learn

  • Open to feedback

  • Honest and not just saying “yes” to please you

During interviews, watch her body language. Is she engaged, listening, and giving real answers? Or just going through the motions?

Try asking tricky open ended questions... "What happens if my son don't want to bathe?"

3. Make Sure Communication Is Clear

Fluent English isn’t necessary — but basic understanding is. (Many Myanmar helpers doesn't know fluent English well)

She needs to understand your instructions clearly, especially if they involve safety, medicine, or food allergies.

And if she doesn’t understand, she should feel confident enough to ask.

Good communication prevents misunderstandings down the road.

4. Check Her Health and Stamina

If your helper is expected to care for elderly family members, chase toddlers, or handle heavy chores, she’ll need to be physically and mentally up for the task.

Ask the agency for her medical reports. Most reputable maid agencies in Singapore should provide this without hesitation.

5. Consider Her Personality Fit

Every home is different. Some families are loud and busy. Others are more private and quiet.

Your maid doesn’t need to be your BFF, but she should fit into the rhythm of your household.

If you’re structured and detailed, don’t hire someone who needs constant reminders.

If you’re more laid-back, avoid someone who’s overly rigid or anxious.

If you can, speak to her directly to get a sense of whether you’ll get along.

6. Always Call the Maid Agency First

Before visiting any maid agency in Singapore, call them first.

Ask:

  • Do you have helpers with the experience I need?

  • What's the agency pricing (and itemised breakdown)?
  • Can I interview her before confirming?

  • What’s your process for replacement or training?

This avoids wasting time and helps you focus only on agencies that actually meet your needs.

Final Thoughts

Hiring the right domestic helper takes effort. Don’t rush it. Be clear on your expectations, ask the right questions, and trust your gut.

With the right fit, your life becomes smoother, your home happier, and your family better cared for.

The wrong fit? Well... you already know.

So take your time. Ask smart. Choose wisely.

And good luck!
